I came to the barn to paint a mural with Scott and Dermot, but after painting for awhile, we painted it all over with gray primer. The resulting blob was kind of shaped like Africa. It reminded me of the blank gray background of David’s “Death of Marat.” It was a wonderful painting, pure action with no planning or contemplation. It was will without the intent towards beauty. As such an action could never be duplicated without a loss of all meaning, and probably a large portion of the beauty, of the original, this is my reinterpretation of that erased mural. Other themes present include but are not limited to: comic book minimalism; “we all die alone”; the beautiful are murdered and the ugly die slowly; silence.
